Project Description:
GeniYanga (Gulitsani ngati Madolo) is a mobile till built for the realities of Malawian commerce. Retail shops, restaurants, salons, pharmacies, car-parts dealers and event organisers use it to track inventory and cashiers, remember which customers owe what, and sell online beyond WhatsApp through dedicated storefronts. It keeps merchants compliant with the Malawi Revenue Authority's EIS mandate by issuing compliant receipts, works offline when the network drops, syncs across multiple stores, and handles barcode scanning, lay-bye, ticketing and OneKhusa payments. The goal was simple: give a shop owner real-time visibility into their business from a phone in their pocket.
Process:
Understanding How Merchants Actually Trade
Spent time with real Malawian merchants to understand the messy realities of day-to-day trade: customers buying on credit, sales happening over WhatsApp, stock spread across more than one store, and cash that rarely reconciles at close of day. Those observations shaped a product that fits existing habits instead of fighting them.
MRA EIS Compliance by Default
Engineered the receipting pipeline around the Malawi Revenue Authority's Electronic Invoicing System mandate, so every transaction produces a compliant receipt without the merchant having to think about it. Compliance became a built-in feature rather than a burden bolted on after the fact.
Offline-First, Multi-Store Architecture
Designed the app to keep selling when connectivity disappears, queuing transactions locally and syncing across multiple store locations once the network returns. A Golang backend handles synchronisation and reconciliation so owners get one accurate, real-time view of every branch.
Online Storefronts & Integrated Payments
Built dedicated online storefronts and wired in OneKhusa payments so businesses could take orders and money beyond WhatsApp threads. Added ticketing, lay-bye and discounts on top, turning a point-of-sale tool into a full commerce platform for small merchants.

Reaching our farmers in the rural areas used to mean paperwork, guesswork and a lot of trips back and forth. With GeniYanga our agents now record sales, track stock and take payments straight from their phones, even when the network drops out. We are serving farmers in places we used to struggle to reach, and for the first time the numbers actually add up at the end of the day.
